Now you can buy a software Rhodes or Wurly and get 100 variations just on that one instrument (clean, distorted, chorused, etc). Years ago, synthesisers emulated EPs rather poorly, and analogue or rompler-based synths had one or two generic sounding EP patches (if your synth had presets).

This changed a while back because of software plugins. I just knew there were different ones, but when I heard recordings, I simply recognised 'electric piano' (although I always knew the Rhodes sound, at least if not too heavily processed with distortion and wah-wahs). Since much of my musical knowledge came from hanging out at guitar stores, I often couldn't distinguish the different kinds. I'm a pianist, but growing up, the music stores around me never carried any, so I never touched one. (We'll include the RMI Electra-piano too, as it's pragmatically an electric piano.) If pressing a key makes a hammer strike something, discuss it here.

All great instruments, but please start a new thread. In other words, this thread is not for discussing acoustic pianos, organs, melotrons, clavolines or synthesisers, except for drawing comparisons. (The subject line is 'electric pianos' because 'electro-mehcnical keyboard instruments' is too awkwardly specific for a title.) This thread is for electro-mechanical keyboard instruments-that is, Wurlitzers, Rhodes, pianets, clavinets and electric grands like the Yamaha CP70, etc.
